Week 1

The Adventure Begins

Evil events have overtaken your Northlands Kingdom.  Your father, the old king, is dead – assassinated by rivals to the throne.  These usurpers now hold the palace with their mercenary royal guard.  You have escaped, and must collect 500 gold pieces to raise a force to smash them and retake your heritage.  Furthermore, the usurpers have powerful friends overseas.  If you can't return to take them out in ten weeks, their allies will arm and you will lose your kingdom forever.

To escape the mercenary royal guard, your loyal servant Ogab smuggled you into a merchant caravan to the southern border.  Now at dawn, you roll out of the merchant wagons into a ditch, dust of your clothes, loosen your swordbelt, and get ready to start the first day of your adventure.

Week 1, Day 1

Map

Cal rolls out of the merchant wagon and takes stock of his surroundings.  Ogab's merchant allies had taken him to the far southern reaches of his kingdom, just north of the Tragoth River.  Word of his escape has certainly reached the usurpers by this point and the mercenary guard will be looking for him.  His best best is to cross the Tragoth River and seek money and allies in lands farther south, beyond the reach of the guard.

Cal looks to the south to the dense swamps beyond the river.  Such marshland would be be dangerous, especially without supplies.  He knows the town of Weshor lies to the east where he might buy equipment, but the mercenary guard will surely be looking for him there.

Cal moves south to the banks of the Tragoth River, but finds no suitable crossing point.  His indecision for the day has left him with few options, so he hunts for food along the riverbank, catching a good supply of fish, then makes a simple camp in a gully out of sight of the road.

While camping on the banks of the river, Cal spots a mercenary guard patrol pass in the night.  He should definitely get into the southern wilds as quickly as possible.  Doing his best to hide evidence of his camp, Cal once again sets off down the river in search of a suitable crossing.

The day again passes with no suitable crossing found.  The Tragoth is truly a wild and mighty river!  Cal again makes camp, gathering a few more fish and doing his best to stay out of sight.

Cal briefly considers moving west along the river, into the woods.  He knows, however, that the mercenary guards will keep searching for him until he is deep in the southern wilds.  The river must be crossed!

Moving down the river, Cal finally finds a suitable crossing location, using a shallow pool shielded by rocks to bypass the worst of the currents.  No sooner has he pulled himself onto the other bank when a wild boar charges out of the swamp!  Cal is caught off guard, and the boar knocks him back into the water, goring him with its tusks.

Fighting to keep his head above water, Cal manages to throw the fierce beast off of him and rise to his feet.  Pulling free his broadsword, he slashes at the boar several times, trying to keep it at bay while he regains his footing.

On equal footing, the beast is no match for a barbarian prince!  Cal slays the animal with his sword, drags the carcass behind a nearby tree, and gets to work removing the usable meat.  As the day gets later, he tries to find a good path deeper into the swamp, but the marshy terrain proves difficult.  Giving up, he makes camp for the night near the river.

Though he hasn't made any progress into the southern wilds, Cal has completely loaded his pack with supplies.  Turly his kingdom is the richest in the land!  But he's been lucky so far in avoiding the mercenary guards.  His top priority is still to make it into the swamp and away from the patrols of his usurpers.

A swamp!  Why did Ogab's merchants have to drop Cal at the edge of an accursed swamp?  The terrain near the river is waterlogged and choked with vegetation.  Cal finds it impossible to make any progress into the southern wilds until he can find a way through this swamp.  As he is searching, he hears a shout from down the river and looks to see four armed guard riding quickly toward him.  His usurper, the scoundrel, has even dressed them with his coat of arms.

Cal looks at the impassable swamp on one side and the raging river to the other.  The guards are on horseback, so there was very little chance he could evade them.  He decides to parley.  These men were once loyal to him, maybe that loyalty still holds.

The four guardsmen ride up to Cal, surrounding him with their horses and demanding his surrender.  Cal appeals to their loyalty.  How could they follow this devious usurper, he asks.  Their true prince was standing before them now!  If ever they served him before, he implores, serve him again now and leave him to retreat into the wilds for a life of solitude.

The guards do not seem convinced.  The usurper, it seems, it either very persuasive or very cruel to his troops.  Sensing that these men will not be swayed, Cal swings his swords wildly at his attackers and attempts to run into the swamp.

With his attackers momentarily confused by the feint, Cal rushes off into the entangling swamp.  He runs through the difficult terrain as quickly as he can, often tripping and falling, but still distancing himself from the guards.  After several minutes of fleeing, Cal find himself completely lost in the swamp.  At least the guards, with their horses, will have a hard time following.

Week 1, Day 5

The swamp seems to have thrown off any pursuit and Cal has now entered the southern wilds past the boundary of his kingdom.  Though he is wounded from his encounters crossing the river, he decides to push on.  He has wasted too much time already.  If he is to raise an army to retake his home, he will need some help from the people of the southern lands.  Finding another river, Cal follows it to the southwest, hoping to find a settlement.

Following the river, Cal finds his way out of the accursed swamp and enters a forest.  Still sticking near the river, he hunts wild game before making camp.

Map

Ahead, the river winds through some more lowlands, spilling out into another tangled bog.  Cal climbs a tree to survey the land.  Beyond the bog, lies open countryside and plains.  He even thinks he can make out farmland, a sure sign of a nearby settlement.  The prince is none too keen to navigate through another stinking marsh, so he scouts out a path that will take him around the bog on much nicer terrain.

Cal turns and heads back north, making his way around the swamp.  The journey through the forest is slow, however, and he is forced to make camp among the trees before reaching the open lands beyond.

While navigating through the forest on his (increasingly lengthy) detour around the swamp, Cal spies up ahead a solitary man riding a donkey.  Cal recognizes this man as a priest, but what he is doing alone in the woods he has no idea.  Perhaps he is lost… or perhaps he can help Cal find a better way around the bog.

Cal approaches the traveling priest and hails him.  The priest seems at first frightened, but then calms down when Cal shows no hostility.  His name is Jarvin and he is from a small church in the nearby farmlands.  He is venturing into the forests in search of a rare herb that is used in their healing salves.  The man doesn't seem interested in any conversation beyond pleasantries and continues on his way into the woods.
